ABB Canada Awarded Converter Station Contract

NSPML has awarded ABB with the contract to design and supply its HVDC Light Voltage Source Conversion (VSC) technology. The contract includes a full VSC bipolar configuration to further improve system availability as well as two converter stations for the ±200 kilovolt (kV) HVDC link. ABB will also supply two 230 kV alternating current (AC) substations in Newfoundland, one 345 kV AC substation in Nova Scotia and two cable transition stations. The project is scheduled for commissioning in 2017. Headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland, ABB was selected as the successful proponent based on a comprehensive proposal which highlighted its expertise in designing and installing HVDC conversion technology.
