Community
We strive to be a valued and contributing member of the communities in which we live, work and operate. We also support our employees, who generously volunteer their time and efforts in their communities.
Engaging local partners around safety and smart sustainability
We’re partnering with fire departments local to our sites in Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia to ensure first responders have the equipment and training required to respond in the event of emergencies related to the Maritime Link assets.
In 2024 we partnered with the Ocean Tracking Network (OTN) to provide ongoing support for Emera Newfoundland and Labrador’s marine, ocean environment and science support needs, enabling OTN to attract additional funding. Based at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, OTN is a global aquatic research, data management and partnership platform with deep expertise in marine tracking systems that has supported the Maritime Link since the project development phase.

Investing in Innovation

To enable the innovators of tomorrow, in 2018 our parent company partnered to create the Emera Innovation Exchange at Memorial University in Newfoundland and Labrador. The Exchange is helping to sustain and enhance student innovation and entrepreneurial programming through entities including the Memorial Centre for Entrepreneurship, the Centre for Social Enterprise, Genesis and other innovation initiatives. By enabling the long-term success of entrepreneurial and social enterprise programming at Memorial, we are also fostering economic development and social benefits for the entire region.
To deepen and reaffirm our commitment in this area, in 2024 Emera Newfoundland and Labrador partnered with the Genesis innovation hub, which is housed in the Emera Innovation Exchange. Genesis provides space and support services for innovators, entrepreneurs and start-ups, helping new enterprises grow and go to market.
Supporting youth
To better prepare students entering the work force, we collaborated with the safety coordinators program at Academy Canada in Corner Brook to develop Workplace Readiness for New Workers. This program provides foundational knowledge about the rights of workers, site safety, important questions to ask and how new workers can ensure their own safety and that of others. Our team members deliver the program each year in Corner Brook and we are exploring ways to expand the offering to other local community colleges.
Emera Newfoundland and Labrador partners with the Women in Resource Development Corporation (WRDC) to create more opportunities for young women in traditionally male-dominated industries. Through mentorship, training and outreach programs, this collaboration aims to reduce barriers and support women in pursuing careers in energy and skilled trades. Our partnership with WRDC will allow the organization to expand its programming to grade schools in Western Newfoundland. A scholarship fund will also be included that will be awarded annually to a woman or gender-diverse person entering into Electronics Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology (Power & Controls), or Powerline Technician programs.
We are excited that this year’s recipient of the Chris Huskilson Memorial Scholarship hails from Springdale, Newfoundland. Awarded annually in honour of the former Emera Inc. CEO, the scholarship supports an Atlantic Canadian student who is attending an Atlantic Canadian university in a program related to science (natural), technology, engineering, entrepreneurship or math. 2024 recipient, Aaron Chaulk, is studying a Bachelor of Science at Memorial University.
We are also proud to support youth benefiting from the St. John’s based charity, Young Adult Cancer Canada, and have participated in the last few years along with other members of the NL energy industry in the Shave for the Brave.
